Prominent evangelicals, including National Day of Prayer Task Force Chairwoman Shirley Dobson and her husband, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, expressed disappointment in Obama's decision.
"At this time in our country's history, we would hope our president would recognize more fully the importance of prayer," Shirley Dobson said in a statement.
Because it's been so effective up until now.

It's a shot, but why cheap? I think it's too soft. These assholes need to be bitch-slapped a lot harder. I'd change the label to 'fuck these people.' Let their psychopatic god come to their rescue.
While we're at it, what color of a president does it take to safely begin to remind everybody that all this god shit in public displays of civic symbols and paraphernalia originated with the bed-wetting fascist Right in the 1950s? It allows the perpetuation of the poisonous myth about this being a 'Christian' country and shit. And it perpetuates the marginalization of secularists, as if they were lepers or gays in a Muslim country or something. America is the only place in the West to still have these bizarre superstitions about atheists; which makes it the thigh-slapping joke, and/or the embarrassment, of the civilized world. Fuck these people.
So let it be written, so let it be done. And you're right about the marginalization of secularism -- this is nothing but SOP for a group with demonstrably fringe beliefs to condition people to reject empiricism and rational self-interest. They used red paranoia to roll the government in the direction of catering to the most asinine, childish segment of the population -- not necessarily believers in general, but the believers who insist that their niche is holy writ, and American canon to boot. They live the rituals and the public piety more than they walk the talk anyway.
And for what? Beseeching an apparently indifferent deity whose main source of enjoyment seems to be fucking with them? They oughta be thanking the Muslim fanatics on the other end of the world, for providing them with at least rhetorical cover, by virtue of their nastier dispositions and deeds. The Christofascists are not flogging or stoning heretics, not yet, but it's hard to discount the hunch that they really really want to.
But they do want to torture them -- which I, for one, would trade for flogging any given day.
The more "religious," the more eager to inflict pain upon others. It's as if -- gasp -- they enjoyed it.
Yeah, it's the perfect vehicle for their not-so-latent sadistic impulses. I mean, I'm all for taking every child-flogging, woman-stoning, boy-buggering Taliban/Qaeda piece of medievalist shit, lining them up against the nearest wall, and fucking ending them instantly, and then following that up with building schools and roads for every village that wants them, and then leaving.
But just get it over with; there's no need for these repressed "my god can beat up your god" weirdos to get their rocks off torturing those assholes. Smart-drone attacks are not going to solve this; we win the people over by convincing them that we care more about their well-being than the caliphate animals who enjoy making their lives miserable.
